Visit our store to view our extensive range of quality carpets, with something to suit any budget, including both natural and man-made fibres. Our collection of wool carpets are renowned for quality, due to their ability to withstand pressure, and have excellent appearance retention properties. Wool offers luxurious underfoot comfort and warmth, and acts as an insulator improving heat retention and energy efficiency. As a natural fibre, wool has an inbuilt resistance to soiling due to its natural oils. Man-made fibre carpets tend to be less expensive, so great if you have a limited budget, and while they don’t have all the attributes of wool, they have various benefits depending on the type of fibres used, this can make them a better choice for your particular needs, such as softness underfoot, stain resistance or durability.
Twist Pile Carpet
Twist pile, where the yarn is tightly twisted together, has a soft and luxurious feel as your feet sink into the pile. Wool carpet has a synthetic fibre added in a 80/20 ratio to strengthen the yarn. Synthetic twist pile is usually polypropylene, which is stain proof but does not wear as well as wool carpet over time.
Loop Pile Carpet
Loop Pile, also known as boucle, is where the yarn is woven, or looped, through the carpet backing and uncut. With its contemporary look, loop pile comes in many different designs, from generous coils, too fine intricate patterns. The biggest home styling opportunity is the many different stripe carpets available.
Stripes and Patterns
Striped and patterned carpet can add colour and a fresh look to your home, and is well suited to staircases and landings. The choice available has increased dramatically over the past few years, including subtle lines, vibrant colours, and complex geometric designs. A reduction in price make stripes a more accessible choice.
At Barretts we offer Sisal, Coir, Seagrass, and Jute natural flooring; each has its own unique look and feel. Sisal is extracted from the Agave Sisalana plant which grows in Mexico, Brazil and East Africa. It is very versatile and hardwearing. This product is tightly woven and has a subtle sheen. Coir is made from the strong fibres of the coconut husks in Kerala India - softened in sea water before they are woven into designs. Coir is very durable and good value for money. Seagrass grows in the tropical climates of China and Vietnam by the coastal river banks. This natural product is dried, harvested and hand spun before woven into flooring. Jute comes from the stalk of the giant corchorus plants that grow in Southern India. As Jute fibres are fine, this product is best used in light traffic areas.
Natural Flooring Styles
The variation in styles and colours available in Natural Flooring is remarkably extensive. From tight boucles and tweeds, to bold basketweaves and herringbone designs, there is something for all home settings. The range of colours will also surprise, with charcoals, light greys and blondes, in addition to the more traditional shades.
Suitability & Usage
The majority of Natural Flooring Barretts sell is Sisal, which is an excellent all-round choice. The style and colour options available mean it can be employed in traditional and contemporary settings. A factory applied stain inhibitor can also improve overall practicality. Recommend for use in most rooms, except kitchens and bathrooms.
Ethical & Sustainable
Alternative Flooring supply the vast majority of our Natural Flooring, and we are very proud of their commitment to producing ethical flooring products. Over 85% of their products are made from sustainable natural sources. In addition, Alternative Flooring plant a tree for every sample ordered, with over 1800 new trees planted so far.
Solid wood flooring is made from, you guessed it, a plank of solid wood. It offers strength, durability and the unbeatable tactile sensation of its natural wood texture. Our range of solid wood flooring comes in a variety of different finishes, each of which bring out a different aspect of its character. Grain patterns, bleaching, mellow hues and more can provide both modern and traditional looks for every area of the home. Engineered wood flooring has the natural beauty of solid wood flooring, only its boards are constructed in a way that makes them more versatile, practical and affordable for modern homes. Its compressed layers prevent it from being too susceptible to expansion and contraction. Simply adding a top layer of solid wood to engineered wood also allows the tree's materials to go much further.
All our wood flooring is supplied by Woodpecker Flooring, a family firm like our own, started by Bruce Ker from his Bristol garage in 1973. The range now covers ten wood flooring ranges, with each offering a comprehensive array of planks sizes, designs, colours, and applications. They believe in their product so much, they are happy to offer a 100 year product guarantee!
Wood Grades and Finishes
Three grades of wood are available - Select (consistent look with few knots), Rustic (more natural look, larger knots, colour variation), and Extra Rustic (pretty much untouched, completely natural look). Finishes include oiled, lacquered, matt lacquered and unfinished, among others. The finishing process includes up to seven layers of lacquer or oil, so top performance is guaranteed.
Delivery & Install
Barretts can handle all your wood flooring requirements, and help you create a natural look in your home. We offer a free measure and estimate service, and advice on the right style, grade, and wood finish. Special floor preparation isn’t usually required, and with our expert fitting we can remove and replace skirting boards to hide the required expansion gap.
