As an independent store specialising in beautiful home furnishings, we've been helping people to love their home for over 50 years.
In 2019 we marked the 50th birthday anniversary of our wonder independent home furnishings store, Barretts of Woodbridge. Opened by Jack and Ann Barrett, the parents of current owner Jill, in 1969, the store has gone from strength to strength, becoming a landmark in the town with its position at the heart of the Thoroughfare.
Grand Opening 1969
Established in May 1969 by Jack and Ann Barrett, here’s a great photo of current owner Jill Barrett, Jack and Ann’s daughter, aged 2, sitting in the bed department at the grand opening.
50th Birthday Celebrations
50 years after Barretts of Woodbridge first opened its doors, Jill is back in our bedroom department holding the original photograph of her pictured in the very same space on opening day!
The great fire of 1970!
Barretts suffered a major set-back, when in October 1970 fire completely destroyed the showroom. The Barrett family were living above the store at the time. Luckily the roar of the fire woke Ann, and they made good their escape, with the shop frontage suffering only superficial damage.
Store re-Opening 1971
Barretts soon bounced back and amazingly we were trading again within three days of the fire, and after eight months of refurbishment, in June 1971, literally from the ashes, the new look showroom was re-opened and ready to welcome back customers once again.

Jill with daughters Vicky & Annie, and her husband Michael - Dec. 2012
Our store mainly sold furniture and beds in the earlier days, with linens, curtains, carpets and rugs, as well as wellbeing, gifts and home accessories being added over the years as the shop began to expand. original owners, Jack and Ann retired in 1992 after 23 successful years trading, and Ann’s brother Ray Morley with his wife Paddy took on the business. They ensured Barretts retained its reputation for delivering a great customer experience, in a relaxed environment. They also made sure the business stayed family oriented. So when Ray and Paddy decided to retire in December 2009, their niece Jill took over the day-to-day running of the store, maintaining the Barretts family line, supported by her now husband Michael, and daughters Vicky and Annie. In 2019 we marked the 50th birthday anniversary of our independent family owned home furnishings store, Barretts of Woodbridge.
We look forward to seeing you soon!
